American Hornbeam

Kendall Hill Nursery grows and offers the American Hornbeam, or Carpinus Caroliniana. The American Hornbeam is known for its visual interesting branchlets and leaves. Its branchlets change from a pale green to a reddish brown and finally a distinctive gray. The leaves come out of the bud pale bronze green and hairy, when full grown they are a deep green above with very prominent feather-veins on the bottom. The American Hornbeam reaches 20’ to 35’ tall at full maturity with a spread of 20’. Typically found in rich moist woods, valleys, ravine bottoms and rocky slopes along streams. The best landscape sites may be characterized as having abundant soil moisture but sufficient drainage to prevent saturation and poor aeration during the growing season but it is not restricted to such sites and can tolerate a wide variety of conditions. No serious insect or disease problems are associated with the Hornbeam. The American Hornbeam can be successfully grown from Zones 3 to 9.
